Great Grandma’s Favorite Cocktail

Great Grandma’s Favorite Cocktail

When I think of my great-grandmother, my memories are flooded with her fondness of family dinners and at every one of those dinners, serving her favorite cocktail, the”Grasshopper”.

Laughter, joke telling, and funny stories are what comes to mind when I remember my great-grandmother’s family get-togethers, and they almost always included Grasshoppers for all.  Not because my parents, aunts, uncles or grandparents particularly liked them, but that is what Granny was serving so that is what everyone was drinking. I was young, six to eight at the most and she made sure to blend a little cream and vanilla ice cream with a touch of creme de menthe so I could have a green drink like everyone else around the table.  I felt so grown up, drinking with the adults, and laughing along with jokes I didn’t understand and pretending to like the minty green concoction just as the adults pretended to like their alcoholic ones.

Years later, when my great-grandmother passed, so did the tradition of green drinks at family dinners.  But for me, Grasshoppers represent fun, family, and good times and because of that, today I celebrate my great-grandmother with this throwback cocktail.
